How to Earn From Covers Legally in 2026
What you need to know about rights, distribution and monetization of cover versions in 2026
What Counts as a Cover?
A cover is a new performance of an already existing composition, where:
- the melody and lyrics (or recognizable parts of them) are kept,
- but the arrangement, style and delivery are original.
It is NOT a remix and not a rework that changes the original.
Important: the voice of the cover performer must be distinguishable from the original.

Why You Can’t Just “Upload” a Cover and Get Paid
Because the original track is protected by copyright.
It has:
- authors (composers, lyricists),
- publishers,
- rights holders (labels, PROs and others).
Without permission you can’t:
- distribute the track on Spotify / Apple Music,
- earn on YouTube / monetize a video,
- sell a cover, receive royalties and so on.
How It Works Legally: The Scheme for Covers
For a cover to be officially uploaded, monetized and paid out, you need to:
- Use a platform with licenses for covers. For example, RHEI Music, which works through official partners, handles licenses and accounts for the authors’ shares.
- Indicate that it is a cover (cover version). This matters in distribution so that the track isn’t rejected or removed.
- Don’t use the original backing track (the recording). The arrangement must be yours, or purchased with rights.
Where Can You Post Covers?
- YouTube: if you use official distribution you can receive ad royalties and Content ID income.
- Spotify / Apple Music / YouTube Music: possible with a license.
- TikTok / Instagram: also distributed as streams.
- BeatStars / Bandcamp / Patreon: with caution, as not every cover is suitable if there are no licenses.
How Much Can You Earn From Covers?
Income comes from:
- streaming on platforms, as with ordinary tracks (part goes to the authors),
- videos on YouTube, through Content ID and advertising,
- donations, paid versions, Patreon,
- use in other creators’ content (if you provide it).
Examples:
- a cover of a popular song can give 100–500 USD a month from Spotify alone,
- on YouTube a cover can go viral and gain millions of views with monetization.
What You Must Not Do
- Upload the original recording (that is not a cover but piracy)
- Change the lyrics without permission
- Make a remix without a license for the master
- Sell a cover as “your own song”
