Shorts get views faster; long videos live longer and monetize better. Beginners often pick Shorts because “it’s easier to go viral” — and six months later find monetization just as far away. Here’s how each format affects the path to the Partner Program.
Thresholds for each format
Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers and one of two:
- 4,000 watch hours on long videos in 12 months;
- 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
From February 1, 2027, new channels need 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views.
Important: Shorts views don’t count toward watch hours. They’re two separate paths.
Comparing the formats
| Shorts | Long videos | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed of first views | faster | slower |
| Subscriber growth | fast, but a less loyal audience | slower, but more loyal |
| Path to monetization | 10M views in 90 days — a high bar | 4,000 hours — more realistic for most |
| Income per 1,000 views | usually lower | usually higher |
| Video lifespan | short | long, comes from search |
Common mistakes
- Only Shorts, hoping for 4,000 hours. Hours come only from long videos.
- Template Shorts. Fast views, but a risk of rejection as inauthentic content.
- Long videos without retention. Hours don’t add up if viewers leave after a minute.
What to choose
For many channels a combination works: Shorts bring new viewers, long videos build hours and income. The right mix depends on the niche, audience and what format suits you. More about Shorts: who should launch Shorts and Shorts monetization in 2027.

FAQ
Do Shorts count toward the 4,000 watch hours?
No. Shorts have a separate threshold — 10 million views in 90 days — and watch hours come only from long videos.
Can you earn from Shorts?
Yes, after joining the Partner Program creators get a share of ad revenue from the Shorts feed. But income per 1,000 views is usually lower than for long videos.
Which is easier: 10M Shorts views or 4,000 hours?
For most channels, 4,000 hours with long videos people watch to the end is more realistic.
