“How soon will I start earning on YouTube?” — every new creator asks. Courses promise first money in a month. Reality differs: some channels reach monetization in a few months, others take over a year, and some never get there. Here’s what it depends on.
YouTube monetization thresholds
To get a share of ad revenue, a channel joins the Partner Program:
- 1,000 subscribers;
- 4,000 public watch hours on long videos in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days;
- compliance with YouTube’s policies, including originality.
From February 1, 2027, new channels need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views. If you’re starting now, plan for the new threshold.
How long it takes
There’s no average that fits everyone. For a new channel the path usually takes from a few months to a year or more of consistent work. What affects it most:
| Speeds it up | Slows it down |
|---|---|
| A niche with demand and a clear audience | A niche too broad or saturated |
| Long videos with good retention | Short videos nobody finishes |
| Consistency — 1–2 videos a week | Gaps of weeks or months |
| Strong thumbnails and titles | “Same as everyone” packaging |
| Analyzing and adjusting the format | Repeating the same mistakes |
Why hours are harder than subscribers
Many channels reach 1,000 subscribers before 4,000 hours: hours need long videos people watch to the end. Shorts-only channels go for the other threshold — 10 million views in 90 days, a high bar. More: Shorts or long videos.
What makes the road endless
- Switching niches often.
- Template content that won’t pass the originality review — especially for AI channels (more).
- Expecting fast money and quitting after 2–3 months.

FAQ
Can you get monetized on YouTube in a month?
For a new channel it’s rare. Reaching 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours usually takes months of consistent work.
Do Shorts count toward 4,000 watch hours?
No. Shorts watch time doesn’t count toward the 4,000 hours; Shorts have a separate threshold of 10 million views in 90 days.
What happens after reaching the thresholds?
The channel applies, and YouTube reviews it against its policies, including originality. A decision usually comes within a few weeks. If rejected, see what to do after a rejection.
