An email from YouTube: your channel no longer meets the Partner Program policies, the reason is “reused” or “inauthentic” content. Monetization is off for the whole channel, not one video. For many creators it’s the most painful scenario: revenue disappears from the entire channel at once.
I have dealt with this since 2018, and since July 2025, when YouTube updated the wording, the number of such requests has grown noticeably.
What YouTube calls unoriginal content
The monetization policies have two related ideas.
Reused content — when the core of a video comes from someone else: other people’s videos, clips, compilations, re-uploads, voice-overs of someone else’s material. Using others’ material is allowed, but only if you add significant original value: commentary, analysis, education, a new meaning.
Inauthentic (formerly “repetitious”) content — videos made from one template with minimal differences, mass-produced, including fully automated videos with no creator involvement. In July 2025 YouTube renamed this policy and started enforcing it more strictly.
Adding background music, speeding a video up or cropping the frame is not original value.
Why the decision covers the whole channel
This is what makes it different from a yellow icon. A yellow icon is set on a single video. Here reviewers look at the channel as a whole and decide that a significant part of it doesn’t meet the policies. So one “good” new video doesn’t change the outcome.
What I have seen in practice
- A channel with near-identical videos: the network it worked with set a condition — change the format. The channel started moving to a new format.
- Videos with no creator commentary: monetization was removed rightfully. Letting go of popular videos was hard, and the decision dragged on. In such cases fixing the content works faster than arguing with the platform.
- A channel built on others’ material that the system saw as a duplicate: we agreed on a format with the creator on camera and sources credited openly.
Sometimes it’s simpler: monetization can come back after fixing the presentation of a specific video (case).
What to do
- Assess the channel honestly. Look at the videos through a reviewer’s eyes: where is your contribution? If the answer is “almost nowhere”, an appeal won’t help.
- Decide what to do with old videos. Some material may be dragging the channel down. You don’t need to delete everything, but leaving it all as is often won’t work either.
- Change the format of new videos. Your voice, analysis, your face on camera, your own footage, a clear point of view.
- Appeal or reapply. If you’re sure the decision is wrong, you can appeal in YouTube Studio. If not, after a first rejection you can reapply in 30 days, after a repeat one in 90. The exact date is in the email.
What not to do
- Reapply without changing anything: the next rejection makes the wait longer.
- Start a second channel with the same content.
- Count on “the AI won’t tell the difference”: people review it.
What next
Getting back into the Partner Program after such a decision is possible, but the path depends on how far the channel has drifted from the policies and how to change it without losing the audience.
If your monetization was removed for reused or inauthentic content, in a consultation I’ll review the channel, tell you what exactly bothers the platform, and suggest a plan of changes.
