You upload a video and a yellow ”$” icon appears next to it right away. Ads are shown in a limited way or not at all. What does it mean, and why does it happen?

I have dealt with yellow icons on creators’ channels since 2016. They are one of the main reasons a channel loses revenue, and sometimes views too.

What the yellow icon means

A green icon means the video is fully suitable for ads. Yellow means YouTube decided the video isn’t fully suitable for advertisers. Ads on it are limited or not shown at all, and revenue drops.

The decision is made by an automated system, and it makes mistakes. But not always: often it has a reason.

Why it appears

The platform evaluates a video by a set of signals: words in the title and description, the video itself, the thumbnail, audio and topic. If the system sees something advertisers consider risky, it limits ads. Sensitive topics, strong language, violent scenes, promotion of certain services, repetitive material without the creator’s own input — any of these can be the reason.

Importantly, the reason isn’t always obvious to the creator. In practice I have seen restrictions caused by a single phrase in the metadata, a fragment of the video and even the video’s design.

Why yellow icons sometimes stick to the whole channel

When a channel accumulates many restricted videos, the system starts trusting the channel less overall. New videos get a yellow icon straight away, and re-reviews carry less weight. That’s the “channel history”.

At that point the problem is no longer one video. It takes a review of the whole picture: which videos are restricted, for what reason, and in what order the restrictions appeared.

Can you remove the icon

Often yes, but not always. It depends on the cause. If the restriction is a system error, a re-review helps. If the cause is in the material itself, it goes away only after the material is changed. There’s no universal button, and the specific techniques depend on the situation.

Examples from practice. One channel got mass restrictions: after reviewing the metadata and agreed edits, monetization came back and restrictions were lifted from most older videos (case). On another, after several edits, videos stopped getting restrictions and views picked up (case).

What not to do

  • Don’t contact support about every video without a review: mass requests don’t improve the odds.
  • Don’t delete old videos without understanding the cause.
  • Don’t publish new videos “with the same problems” hoping the system will sort it out.

What next

A yellow icon is a symptom, not a diagnosis. To understand what’s happening on your channel, you need to look at specific videos and the channel’s history.

If you have yellow icons and don’t know how to get rid of them, in a consultation I’ll review your channel and name the causes and first steps.
